Katerina Nikolaou
Professor of Byzantine History

Katerina Nikolaou is Professor of Byzantine History, specializing in the Early and Middle Byzantine periods, in the Department of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
She received her B.A. in History and Archaeology and her Ph.D. in Byzantine History from the same Department.
She worked as a teacher of Classical Philology at the American College of Greece and, from 1988 to April 2008, as a researcher at the Institute (Centre) for Byzantine Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, where she was promoted to
the rank of Senior Researcher (B). In 2008, she was elected to a professorship at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where she has served ever since.
From 2022 to 2025, she served as Chair of the Department of History and Archaeology. She has also served as Director of the Department’s Division of History and as Director of its Postgraduate Studies Programme “Byzantine World: History
and Archaeology”.
She has participated in numerous national and international conferences and academic meetings, and has delivered a wide range of invited lectures and taught courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels at universities in Greece and abroad. She has also served on the Organizing Committees of international symposia.
Her research interests focus on the social and practical life of the Byzantines, with particular emphasis on the position and role of women in Byzantine society, as well as
on hagiography (6th–11th centuries) and Byzantine epigraphy. From 2016 to 2026, when she voluntarily stepped down, she served as a member of the Commission épigraphie (Inscriptiones Graecae Aevi Byzantini) of the International Association of Byzantine Studies (AIEB). She has also been involved in the application of digital technologies to Byzantine studies since 1985.
She is the author of four books, one of them co-authored, and the editor of ten volumes. She has also published more than thirty-five articles and studies in peer- reviewed and other scholarly journals, conference proceedings, and electronic
publications.
